What You Can Do When Life Throws You a Curve Ball

There’s no doubt about it… unexpected, out-of-the-blue, disruptive or surprising events are called curveballs. They seem to come out of nowhere like a child feeling fine one moment, then throws up the next, a flat tire when you had your tires rotated the week before, losing your keys or getting locked out of your house or an airline cancels your flight at the last minute.

The big question for all of us though is how do we handle it? Can you accept it, switch gears and go with the unexpected or do you find yourself totally annoyed, frazzled or ready to scream about the unfairness of it all?

Our response often depends on how filled up we are and how well we’ve been taking care of ourselves. When I’m feeling rested, calm and grounded, then a curveball may be simply a little blip. However, when I didn’t sleep well the night before, feel hungry, been too busy helping other people, then a curveball can trigger any number of memories and I’ll admit, I have been frazzled and ready to scream. Fortunately, that’s not my usual response these days since I do my best to keep myself feeling full to overflowing physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Recently, a curveball hit me when the clutch in my manual transmission car gave out during rush hour right at a busy intersection. I immediately called AAA and while I waited for a dispatcher to answer my call, I took a breath and found myself asking the Divine for help. Hey, I called in God/dess, all my Divine Friends, Angels and Archangels, everyone I could remember as I tried to stay calm.

Then I realized, due to it being close to 6:00pm, all the garages were closed for the weekend and I wouldn’t have a car the whole weekend. Since I’d planned to do many errands and spend time in nature, I was disappointed to say the least. So, in that moment, I asked all my Divine Friends to help me make lemonade out of the lemons in this situation.

Wow, did they.

As I walked home from the gym the next day, I took the time to stop at a new cafe and restaurant to check out their menus. I also went into a Knitting Shoppe and a Cupcake bakery, all places that intrigued me for months. Since it’s always hard to get parking nearby and since I was on foot, it was easy to drop in and check them out.

On that Saturday afternoon, I walked into an Aquatic Park I haven’t visited in years. On Sunday, I walked down to the Emeryville Marina and sat on a bench and watched sailboats skim the water and glide under the Golden Gate Bridge. Hey, it was a tough place to hang out, what can I say.

What amazed me as I walked home from the garage after my car was towed early Monday morning was that I really had made lemonade that weekend. Instead of rushing around running a gazillion errands, I puttered around at home doing little things I put off, enjoyed nature nearby and felt so relaxed and connected to myself.

So, the next time life throws you a curveball or two, I encourage you to call in your Divine Friends and ask them to help you make lemonade out of the challenging situation and see what happens.
